At the convention of Goans in Lisbon this past June, I learned from one of the attendees that casteism was rife and dividing the community there. I dumped my prepared notes and spoke out strongly against the unfairness and injustice inherent in perpetuating the caste system. A few people complimented me on taking a stand, but I do not believe I made too many converts. I spoke my mind because I felt the issue needed to be addressed, and as perhaps the oldest attendee there my words as a community elder would carry some weight. Regards, Victor Rangel-Ribeiro
