We cannot speak about Christmas without thinking of Manger, shepherds, kings
or wise men and Harod. Jesus was born in a stable at Bethlehem. For over last
two hundred years we have been reciting this sentence like parrots. Stable
represents dirt, poverty, humility. Usual poor people have dirt around their
place because they have to rear animals to survive. Jesus came to live among
these sorts of people. It’s only during Christmas we royally think about the
poor and try to distribute sweets and clothes and grains to them while for
eleven months we never think of them and if at all we have them in our minds it
is when we need these people to work for us and many times work as slaves. Lots
of people have servants in their homes. They are sometimes treated very badly.
We make them slog day and day out without feeling a pinch of pain to our hearts
and without thinking that they are human beings. Many times these poor people
while lying down on the floor to sleep at night sigh a sign of relief that
their bones can be rested. Many of us do not think of our poor parents when
they come to old age we leave them alone in their homes just because we cannot
accommodate them in our homes or have no time for them. We see these old senior
citizens struggling in banks, general stores, sometimes in courts, or
Government offices to get their work done. Their children are busy with their
jobs abroad or might have settled abroad and have no time for their parents. I
once met a gentleman in a bank who asked me to write a withdrawal slip. He had
five hundred in the account and wanted to withdraw three hundred. I could see a
number of five hundred deposited every month and inquired from him as who is
sending him this five hundred. He told me that during his younger days he was
tutoring a girl in maths and science. This helped this poor girl to pass her
matriculation and go to higher secondary and pass a twelve standard. Now she is
married and out of gratitude has been sending five hundred to him. She can
afford that much only as her husband works for a very small salary and she is a
housewife but she has been sacrificing to save for him. When I inquired about
her children he told me that he has a son in states but does not even send he a
Christmas card .He has a daughter in Australia and she is married but no time
for this poor man. Jesus has come to live with these types of people.
The kings remind us of the kingdom of God that is yet to be established within
us. This kingdom is a place of love and understanding and co operation and
sharing and caring for one another. Once I met a man and his wife and though we
were strangers he said “Good Morning God loves you >” I was stunned by these
greetings. Many times when in Church we just want to rush home after mass, a
home of selfishness, a home of pride etc. Very few have fellowship. The
Protestants always begin their prayer service with fellowship. We should
appreciate this instead of criticizing them.
Herod stands for selfishness, greed, and pride envy. Herod stands for hatred.
