While religious commitment is a matter of personal choice, it has a bearing on other aspects of individual and social life. *Changing Gods: Rethinking Conversion in **India* (Penguin, 2007) is a courageous examination of the questions of faith, community and politicized religiosity in a multireligious society threatened by the spectres of extremism. It argues for a rethinking of religious conversion in India from the viewpoint of a 'religious disarmament'. Rudolf Heredia is a distinguished sociologist and a Jesuit. He is currently a research fellow at the Indian Social Institute, New Delhi, and Editor of the Institute's journal, *Social Action*. He earned his licentiate in philosophy (1967) and his bachelor's degree in theology (1973) from Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune, and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Chicago (1979). He founded the Social Science Centre at St Xavier's College, Mumbai, in 1980. Among his numerous publications are: *Voluntary Action and Development: Towards a Praxis for Non-governmental Agencies*; *The Katkari Nomads in Transition*; and *The Family in a Changing World*. His papers have appeared in *The Economic and Political Weekly *and *Contributions to Indian Sociology*, and his articles have appeared in *The Times of India*, *The Hindu*, and *The Indian Express*.
