Wonder if the people spewing out contempt for the poor on this forum every pause to even consider the role played by the "ragpickers", in cleaning the sh*t from out city. They play a key role, and if not for them we would have been drowning in even more garbage, thanks in large part to our middle-class fuelled consumerism which we just don't want to talk about. (Wonder what it takes to sustain a House of Lords, chauffer-driven, fourwheeler -- not Nano! -- lifestyle in Goa!)
Actually, the "ragpickers" are people who sort through the mounds of paper waste, that comes in each morning and evening, as packing for newspapers sold in the locality. Is it better if these wastes were taken and dumped at Cura, Dona Paula or wherever? Or that they got recycled in a more eco-friendly manner that gives a livelihood to those struggling to make ends meet? Rajan is clearing missing (a significant) part of the picture, and his US-returned arrogance makes him unable to see it. FN On 30/01/2008, Rajan P.
