The data also shows that Verna is the most accident prone zone with maximum accidents registered during 2007, while Panaji is the safest place, barring the maximum car accidents category which informs that the capital city has experienced the maximum car accidents during last year - 291. Altogether 4,020 road accidents were registered last year, which also included 895 accidents caused by 1,711 heavy vehicles - 476 buses, 852 trucks and 383 tempos/ pick-ups - at a percentage of 42.56. The statistics, providing the break-up further informed that in case of buses, 10 were fatal accidents, 17 grievous accidents, 94 minor accidents, while 144 accidents in the non-injury category, collectively adding up to 265 bus accidents.In case of the trucks, the data shows that there were 23 fatal, 16 grievous, 132 minor and 270 non-injury type accidents, while in case of the tempos/ pick-ups, there were 12 fatal, 11 grievous, 66 minor and 100 non-injury kind of accidents. The statistics also maintains that during the year, 5 fatal accidents were attributed to taxies, 3 to auto rickshaw and nil to tractors, with 92 taxies, 146 auto rickshaw and 2 tractors were involved in accidents in various categories. The maximum accidents were registered in the Verna police station numbering 405, followed by police stations at Mapusa (330), Margao (316), and Ponda as well as Panaji, 315 each. The maximum percentage of increase in accidents was observed at Colva police station - 23.75 per cent, followed by police stations at Anjuna (21.79 per cent), Quepem (21.05 per cent), Calangute (20.64 per cent) and Margao (17.91 per cent) The maximum fatalities were registered by the Ponda police station numbering 46, followed by police stations at Verna (26), Vasco (25) and Mapusa (24). The maximum bus accidents, 56 in all, were registered at the Verna police station, followed by those registered at police stations at Margao (51), Mapusa (50), Ponda (46) and Old Goa (30). The maximum truck accidents, 110 in all, were registered at the Ponda police station, followed by those registered at police stations at Bicholim (88), Verna (76) and Curchorem (57). The maximum car accidents, 291 in all, were registered at the Panaji police station, followed by those registered at police stations at Verna (216), Agacaim (134) and Porvorim (127). Finally, the maximum two-wheeler accidents, 224 in all, were registered at the Mapusa police station, followed by those registered at police stations at Verna (207), Ponda (202), Margao (185) and Panaji (158). Furthermore, the statistics informs that 145 two-wheeler riders were killed, in 2007 as compared to 120, in 2006, while 43 pillion riders were killed, last year as compared to 22 who lost their lives, year before last. The statistics also reveal that altogether 1,93,956 M V cases were booked, in 2007, while 1,68,888 M V cases were registered, in 2006. As for the collection of fine, the year 2007 saw an amount of Rs 2,52,35,300 being collected from erring vehicles, while during the year 2006, an amount of Rs 2,03,18,050 was collected.
