Sebastian,
The place to make money in mining is where:
1) There are little or no environmental rules
2) Enforcement of the rules are lax.
3) The authorities can be made to turn a blind eye.

The real place to make money is where the above three come together.

I took another look at Sesa Goa today. Its shares were trading at Rs. 35
(pre-split) on Jan 1st, 2003. Five years later, its shares are trading at Rs.
3,427.00. These are excellent financial results. In addition, Sesa Goa has
announced a ten for one stock split. This usually means that the stock becomes
affordable to more people and, as a result, the stock price goes up.

Having said that, I have often read of illiterate peasants in Chile and Peru
who have been able to stop the operations of the giant multi-nationals because
they were polluting the water and air. At times these peasants have stoped the
multi-nationals BEFORE they started polluting the environment. I have often
wonder why  residents of Goa have not been able to duplicate what their
counterparts in Chile do.

Now that the TOI is in Goa, do you think that residents in Goa would use that
channel to voice their concerns?  While I am hoping for the best, the fact
remains that Sesa Goa and all other ore exporters in Goa are going to get much
better prices for their ore. Expect a bonanza in mining.

BTW, Rajan Perrikar sent me an email confirming that he is following my advice.
All I have to figure out now is how to get him to send photographs to the media
and words to the miners........
