South Asian Film Festival in Goa from Fri (June 27) to Mon (June 30) At Kala Academy, and ESG, Panaji, Goa http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2008-June/076384.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nice poem. That day isnt far if police intelligence doesnt keep record of inflammatory speeches as is rightly pointed by Mr Dileep. If one reads some marathi dailies one will find articles of inflammatory speeches to icite Hindus agaisnt muslims even before 2006 Sanvordem riots. Will police look at this as evidence or consider each incident as unrelated without seeing any systematic planning and design. nn seebelow http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=6232&cid=26 *Meet calls for toning up police intelligence network* *HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JUNE 28 –* A peace meeting convened by the South Goa district Magistrate has called for toning the police intelligence gathering network and prompt action against trouble makers fomenting communal tension, even as The Art of Living and the Inter-Faith group has offered its services to educate the public on the need to maintain peace and brotherhood amongst various religious communities. The police functioning came under scanner as the participants at the peace meeting sought to know whether the men-in-uniform maintain any track of the inflammatory speeches by certain individuals and organizations made in recent times. Dilip Prabhudessai sought to know whether the police has any CDs of the inflammatory speech made at Pimpalkatta and other places in recent times, while another participant said the police should beef up its intelligence network not just to take note of public speeches, but what's going on indoors of certain organizations. The meeting saw social activist, Shridhar Kamat staging a walk out when the Collector refused to reply when asked whether the administration tackled Friday's violence properly. The collector maintained that the peace meeting has been convened to suggest ways and means to promote peace and not to answer question on the incident. "If you have come for these answers, then the meeting is not for you. You may even walk out", the Collector said. Kamat shot back say it's his right to question the administration, adding that the Collector cannot tell him to walk out of the meeting. Shridhar further said though this is the third time such as an incident is happening in Margao, the administration has failed to crack a whip. "Are you scared of these people", he asked, before staging a walk out. Margao Municipal Councilor Savio Coutinho suggested that the police keep a tab on junctions and certain public places, where eve teasing is common. The district Magistrate gave clear-cut instructions to the SP, South Shekhar Prabhudessai to ascertain all such junctions, but questions were raised whether the police has adequate manpower to undertake such as huge exercise. BJP leader Rupesh Mahatme and BJP MMC Councillor Raju Shirodkar said trouble can be nipped in the bud if the police act quickly on the complaints by arresting the accused persons. Councilor Raju Shirodkar said though he is a member of the peace committee, the police detained him late Friday night under preventive detention. Similarly, Rumdamol deputy Sarpanch Ulhas Tuemcar said he was asked by a police officer on Friday whether he is a member of the Bajrang Dal, while BJP leader Shaikh Jin charged the police for targeting the opposition at the behest of the ruling politicians. "These actions by the police will not help bring peace in the city", they felt. M K Sheikh, Dr Venkatesh Hegde, Joan Rebello, Inez Cotta Carvalho and others participated in the meet. The district Magistrate, G P Naik directed the SP, South to take immediate action against those making inflammatory speeches and indulging in eve teasing and called for quick action in such situations. He also appealed to the people to help and co-operate with the administration to maintain peace and calm and to verify the antecedents of the tenants and personnel engaged by the security agencies. The peace committee will be formally constituted on August 9.
