Yes, one remember 'Bud-kulo' - he was likely from Cansaulim where the 'carrera/caminao' started its morning route to Margao. One only heard his name but never saw him; if I did see him (he likely collected the money on the carrera), he was short, under-slept, never smiled and balding. The drivers were Caxinath (Cansaulim) and one Asis (whose nephews are the fammed Monsorate brothers, jazz musicians). Traffic along the costal route was soo rare, on one occasion, my 'amig' Prakax was standing on the road and did not hear the carrera come....so Caxinath got out of the cab, slapped him on his back, got back in and drove off. They were enemies forever! The horn-sound of the caminao was never loud and its arrival announced by the faint sound of the engine and the ponk-ponk air-horn! However, there was no rush to get to Margao and they usually waited. "Rao-re, rao-re" often-heard cry when charging towards the road. A trip to Margao was a big event and something straight out of Senor Miranda's drawings: the rushing dogs, the baatkaans followed by the pooskem. In the rush, the baatkanis 'camizol' would show.......which was rather scandalous, specially if it was not laced *ouch*. The trip into Margao was full of expectation: the bright coloured drink stands, the smell of Marliz cake and caramel and Donna Saccru of Arrosim.....whose rosy perfume and powder (pau) neutralized all the fish and assorted smells of the previous day. The late Donna Sacramenta's need to rush into Margao would put any modern businessman to shame! The return trip from Margao was usually quiet: everyone was tired from the shopping for 'kunem' and in the summer, the pleasant smell of maankurad the baatkar purchased (neatly tied to his handkerchief).
Thanks for the picture; so many sweet memories, so many uneventful, yet memorable trips!
