Churchill Bros player assaulted at Colva

MARGAO: The Colva police played host to a VIP guest on Tuesday morning as PWD
minister Churchill Alemao came rushing to the police station on learning about
the assault on one of the star football players of the Churchill Brothers
sports club.

Dannies Fernandes, believed to be an ace player, was assaulted by one Ravindra
Audi at Colva on Tuesday.

The Colva police have registered a non-cognizable offence against the accused
on the basis of a complaint lodged by Dannies.

Churchill was seen engaged in a lengthy discussion with the Margao
sub-divisional police officer, Umesh Gaonkar, for well over an hour at the
police station.

The presence of the high profile politician also drew a sizeable crowd of
curious onlookers and media personnel to the police station that instantly
turned the petty dispute into a prestige issue.

Dannies, in his complaint to the Colva police, said that he was returning home
from his usual practice session on a motorcycle when the accused blocked his
way and charged him of trespassing into his property. An argument ensued and
the duo soon came to blows.

Migrant labourers also joined the duel at the instance of Audi and allegedly
began pelting stones.

A profusely bleeding Dannies rushed to the Colva police station and lodged a
complaint. Police sources informed that Dannies was immediately rushed to the
Hospicio hospital at Margao, where he was administered medical treatment and
was subsequently discharged.

The news about the assault on his star player prompted Churchill to rush to the
Colva police station to secure justice for his employee. DySP Gaonkar is learnt
to have assured Churchill of conducting a thorough probe into the matter.
Churchill however preferred not to comment on the issue when questioned by
media persons and hurriedly made his exit from the Colva police station.

Meanwhile, the accused, Ravindra Audi, has also lodged a counter complaint
against the Churchill player accusing him of trespassing into his property and
damaging some pipes lying within the compound wall surrounding his property.
