PANAJI: The Directorate of Archives and Archaeology has written to the Town and
Country Planning department to issue a corrigendum vis-a-vis the deletion of
the 12-odd protected monuments from the list of protected monuments in the
state.

As a follow up to the hue and cry raised over the deletion of important
archaeological sites and monuments from the list, especially near mining areas,
by heritage lovers the department has asked the chief town planner to issue a
revised list as a corrective step.

The archives and archaeology department has a list of 52 sites in Goa,
including forts, caves, religious places and other ruins. The monuments deleted
from the list by the TCP were the forts of Reis Magos, Corjuem, Mormugao and St
Estevam, Sidhanath cave, Surla, mosque at Surla Tar, British cemetery at Dona
Paula, Shirgao cave, site of the Narayandev temple at Vichundrem and the
Kaivalya muth at Consua.

All these monuments were included in the list of protected monuments on October
2003. However, the site where the ancient image of Buddha was discovered at
Colvale has been delisted as the area has been buried under the approach road
to the new Colvale bridge.
Similarly, the ruins of Manguesh temple at Cortalim have also been excluded
from the list. On the other hand, the site of rock carvings at Pansaimal in
Sanguem and rock carvings at Cazur in Quepem taluka have been included in the
list.

Meanwhile, the department has excluded St Anne’s church, Talaulim and the
temple of Malikarjun at Shristhal from the list of protected monuments.
Monuments under the purview of the protected list amounts to 52.

Prajal Sakardande of the Goa Heritage Action Group said that the deletion of
the monuments by the TCP was a blunder. He also said that the archives and
archaeology department should ensure that the correction is done. END
