Querido Gabriel,

Mention of Joku Melo's flooded me with a cascade of nostalgic memories:

Being a comporary of Fortunato & Filocha I used to visit often and remember
the awe that their well struck us with. It was, however, diminished because
the well of the Escola Primária, a bare 100 metres away, perhaps bored into the
same laterite mass, was quite as deep.

Not the most daredevil San Joao well-hopers would ever try either one.

But the Goan well that takes my breath away is that of Mário Cabral e Sá, at his
vila in Divar. For sheer depth it stands alone. Moreover being dug into
alluvial soil.

BTW Gabriel, in which princele state did Rao Sahib serve and received his title?

He was the other magnet drawing me to the Melo mansion, or rather his books.

I read them all to his great joy.

And great joy to you, dear Ven, in your quest for the sublime Goan well. But
pray do not get narcistically attached to it.

Alfred...
