Bonefacio Lopes writes :- My heart sank, tears rolled down, when i read the
message of Remo Fernandes, a well renowned figure in Goa , if he thinks of
migrating what about us?I do not want to blame any politician , i do not want
to blame any developer, i do not want to blame any outsider , nor the
central/state Govt, nor the police etc etc etc, .................every Goan is
to be blamed for what has happened to our motherland, they keep silent and let
things go by , they run out of Goa for better living and are ready to slog
overseas, but not ready slog for our motherland, but when an outsider comes in
for investement be it good or bad they are the first to criticise with remarks
that the outsiders have come in blah ....blah....

This is not true; it’s no use shooting all around except the target. The real
culprits for Goa reaching the stage it has reached today, is the majority of
our Goans themselves. Not for any other reason, but for having kept on electing
scoundrels to represent them in the Assembly. It was not ignorance, nor
illiteracy that has made them do this, but arrogance and a tinge of vengeance,
as they had, and still have delusions that they were suppressed & oppressed
during the erstwhile regime. They now have a sense of being liberated to do
whatever they feel like, and when in trouble need people who’ll help them out,
legally or illegally. They used to brag that: “Regedoria is now out, and
panchayat will rule the village”. They stopped taking advice from the learned
like before, they felt they turned wise overnight. I remember that somewhere
around late sixties, our people who used to do menial work say: “We are old, so
we come to work, our children go to college now. We also have become big like
you all”. The politicians did not lag behind in kindling this fire of divide,
they knew the majority of votes were with the illiterates. So they came up with
Laws that meant “Taking from John and giving Paul”. In the seventies we warned
these people, but no one took heed. We told them that ‘Ghantis’ would come and
do cheaper labour. And then the “ghantis’ came, and politicians capitalised on
them.
So do not blame the Goans who have left Goa. Many of them have forfeited their
wealth here for a decent living outside India. It is not that their hearts do
not bleed for Goa. It is that you can never forget nor detach from your
Motherland Goa, and you will never ever get a place on this Earth liken to Goa
of before.
