Dear FN,

BSNL has major shortcomings in the way they deal with customer grievances and
their services leave much to be desired. For example, late February this year,
nearly 200 telephones, including mine, from Socorro (Bardez) area went dead and
along with it the broadband facility has become non-operational. After
repeated visits to their Porvorim Exchange, BSNL informed the affected
customers in mid-March that a fault has developed in the phone cable which is
buried deep under the stretch of the NH-17 between O' Coqueiro and ICICI ATM
and they need permission from National Highways Authority, Delhi, to dig up the
highway and rectify the fault. As a temporary substitute they provided us with
WLL phones with changed phone numbers BUT WITHOUT broadband/internet
connectivity. Till today, after 8 months of denial of internet service, there
is NO PROGRESS whatsoever. I for one had no option but to go for a slow
dial-up internet facility with a private ISP at a cost of Rs.525/- plus taxes
per month so that I could access the internet for emails, web-surfing and net
banking purposes.
Admittedly, their (BSNL) tariff for services is much lower than private ISPs
but their lethargy in these days of CHANDRAYAN-1 puts us right back to the
bullock-cart age.

Best wishes and regards,
SILVAN D'SA, Ambirna, Socorro.

Subject: [Goanet] BSNL services

While BSNL, the GoI-run service provider does has some shortcomings,
it has been improving in its services of late. Also, it seems less
likely to overcharge (unlike the private) ISPs. See this useful
comparison of services offered, a link which was drawn to my attention
