It is a tragedy of our times that a person who presided over the ethnic
cleansing and genocide of over 2000 persons of his own state should be feted
and felicitated by our top businessmen. But then our businessmen were never
known for practising ethics. It is sad that the greatest Gujarati, Mahatma
Gandhi who lived in the last century has all but been forgotten in the land
of his birth. He inspired and was a beacon to people like Martin Luther King
Jr, Nelson Mandela and so many world leaders. He identified himself with the
lowest and practiced what he preached. It is an irony that his life was
snuffed out by a person belonging to the same ideology of the person who is
being eulogized today.
But then the world over, dictators and businessmen have got on well. Both
need each other for their own advancement and survival.
