It never fails to amuse me just how similar extremist groups the world over
are, be they Christian, Muslim, Jewish or Hindu. There is, ofcourse, the
intolerance towards other religions and adherents of such religions, claiming
of one's own God to be the righteous one, grotesque homophobia, censorship of
intellectuals, art and science and the often the most victimised on that list
will be women.
At the heart of all fundamentalist groups lies the notion of the dominant male.
This tribal ideology traces back to when males of certain lineage held absolute
power. To them belonged the Gods, Goddesses and the Goodness of the earth.
Anyone that threatened this hierarchy of power was to be eliminated. Women,
have always been targets for fundamentalist groups. Over the centuries they
have been demonised as witches, vixens, harlots and co-conspirators.
As if on cue, Hindu extremist groups went on a rampage in Mangalore, slapping
and kicking women. Notice that the attackers did not target the men in the
Club. Those who have not seen this disturbing video, do take a minute to watch
it and let it make your stomach churn. When, Muslims were being massacred in
India, we, Christians kept quiet. Perhaps, we thought to ourselves they will
leave us alone. When Christians were being turned out of the homes, their
churches burnt and their clergy raped, Hindus kept quiet. Afterall, there might
be something to these charges of conversions and Inquisitions. Even the
moderate Hindu bought into the propaganda.
Next came the artists, the film-makers, the intellectuals and true to form, now
they come for our women. Now, let no Indian with a mother, sister, wife and
daughter stay quiet. Not unless we want to regress a hundred years. Not unless
we want to live in a society where half the population is subjugated.
Speak now before it is too late. Here is the video. Imagine these women to be
your sisters or daughters.
