Hi Mervyn, The key principle of volunteering as I understand it, is that whoever volunteers gets a chance to decide on how he runs things... So I respect your decision here.
However, one suggestion if you think it would help: Let everyone choose the top ten posts of a given month, and rank them. For the top-ranked post on any list, you allocate ten points, nine to the second, eight to the third, and so on... It might turn time-consuming, unless someone writes some nifty code to sort this out. (JoeGoaUK, I wonder if you count everything manually!) But this could give some incentive to posters, and also encourage us to read Goanet more closely. Besides, it would help a wider range of posters know that their comments and approaches are appreciated. Even if you think this is realistic, it might be too late to implement it right now.
