Eugene/Mario

I believe what Mario meant was..M.Boyers talent in composing the verses when
he was called 3-4 times (encore).
I have not seen any Konkani tiatrist having sung/composing on spot....it was
in the olden days when they used to sing for the ground Khells n Zagors.
William De Curtorim immitates M.Boyer now.

Recently I watched a tiatr in Margao..Tallyeo Marat' by Milagres de Chandor.
Trio of Francis de Tuem-Marcus Vaz-Lawry were called 5-6 times, and each
time they sang a different verse. The song was about Dhiryeo and the MLA, where Francis was seen pulling the bull (cardboard cut out). Inbetween when they were called again, a pant was seen hanging on the bulls Horn. :) ...(ofcourse this was before the election results were out). The same tiatr was to be staged in Panjim, and just a day before the show there was an ad in the papers highlighting this song..and there was a prize of Rs. 1000/- for anyone who would disclose on whom the song was based...this was a publicity stunt as everyone in Margao knew about it. The ad also said that this trio will be performing only in the cities. Now most of the singers of political songs or comic songs compose additional verses, incase they are called again n even if not called or just a few
whistles they will stay there and sing the extra verse.

Coming back to Boyer, well it is true that he would not act in any tiatr if Sucorine was in the cast. I have seen a couple of times in the villages M.Boyers name was shown in the handbills but he was not a part of the tiatr. This was the contractors trick to pull the crowd. Sometimes Boyer was only in the cast for the songs, he would come with a pilot just before the interval, sing one decent song and a comedy song after the interval
n vamoos for another tiatr.

Although M.Boyer did not have a good voice, his song words had a strong message, and thats what many goans from villages appreciated..right from the time he sang his award winning song 'SAREM'. Some of his old songs, Goemche Konvent, Ixttagoth, Adim tem Antam Hem are still missed by Goans and are hard to find. Besides his own albums, Golden Goa, Tiatrist and 25 Vorsani he also sang in other tiatrists album. In his album Tiatrist he introduced his two sons Remus n Errol as Jr. Boyer.

M.Boyer sang comedy duets with mostly Remmie Colaco and Alfred Rose, one of the songs with
Alfred Rose was 'Bikunn Martele'.

M.Boyer was famous all over Goa and Mumbai. Many of the Goans who were bald were given the
add nanv as M.Boyer.:)

May his soul rest in Peace

Mario Rodrigues said that Boyer had a "talent for composing songs
onstage/onthe spot."

Perhaps Mario could tell us if he was told this by Boyer himself or he
heard from others.
As far as I know, this is a myth created around Boyer. In his heyday,
Boyer had become larger-than-life. He did improvise his dialogues. Many
tiatrists still make up their own dialogues when they forget their
original lines or if they fail to hear the prompter correctly.
Boyer dominated the scene and he exerted lot of influence, at times even
threatening to stage his own tiatr in direct competition to someone with
he had a disagreement or some issue. It is a known fact that he would not
act in any tiatr if Soccorine was part of the cast.
His love affair with Antonette is one of tragic stories of the Konknni
stage. Though both married different persons, their eyes showed affection
for each other when met or acted together.
