Battle for Basilica
Portugal's seven wonders spark controversy

An initiative in Portugal to list the 7 wonders of Portuguese origin
in the world has been slammed by historians as "silly", and has drawn
angry reactions in many of its former colonies across the world.

In Goa, the Freedom Fighters Association said Portugal had no business
to claim the Basilica of Bom Jesus as a Portuguese monument and has
asked the state government to take up the matter officially with
Portuguese authorities. [end of excerpt]

Mario observes:

Whose freedom is the "Freedom Fighters Association" fighting for, I wonder?  It
seems like they have descended into sillyness.

Whether the list is silly is a matter of opinion with little consequence.  It
was based on a poll that was not scientific and should be taken with a grain of
salt.

I come from a family that included actual Goan freedom fighters but have no
problem with Bom Jesu being listed as a Portuguese monument, which it clearly
is, having been built by the Portuguese.  Everyone knows that it is now
maintained by India as a historical monument.  It is simply silly to even
question this.
