Rico,

I am in perfect agreement with you with respect to condolences to the family.

What I was answering was Joe's question: "why more and more people venture into
the sea at Miramar" in the absence of lifeguards, and you took me out of
context.

What I am getting at is the attitude of youth, who needlessly put their lives
at risk. Unfortunately, Without being regional, I do see, unfortunately, us
brown-skins (and other Asians for that matter) taking unnecessary risks,
perhaps in trying to imitate the more experienced people.  Just today I saw a
true-life TV episode on Sydney's beaches with three Asian men being rescued
from the sea. I have been taught by my parents (and my father was a good
swimmer in his days) to treat the sea with respect, and never take chances. It
sometimes appears that most people who have never seen the sea think of it as a
large swimming pool, not knowing it can be treacherous what with waves and
creatures that it can harbour, like jellyfish.

Now in this case, I understand the businessman took a kayak into the waves,
without any safety gear. Now, even experienced white-water rafters wear
floatation devices and other safety equipment, and it would be a foolhardy
person who would go into rough seas without adequate protection.  Apparently.
going by the news, the friends told the police, “He would never wear a life
jacket. When we insisted that he wear it before going kayaking, he would tease
us and say that while we might be scared, he isn’t.” - now if that isn't
bravado, I don't know what is. Even if there were life-guards, from my point of
view, it would have been rather difficult to save the man without adequate
means to do so (e.g. inflatable motor-craft) in, what appears to have been, a
rip current  (a rip is a strong current of water running out to sea -
http://www.scienceofthesurf.com/SOSFact_Sheet_Rip.pdf).

The structures you talk of is education. Instruct people to swim *well* in
relatively calm waters before they venture out to sea, and teach them to repect
the waves.Teach people what to do if they get ino difficulty (signs that a
life-guard can recognise that they are in difficulty), the meaning of various
flags, etc.  And always have people to look out for you if you do venture into
deeper waters, as life-guards may not always see you, especially if you
suddenly disappear.

I do hope you understand my perspective.

Gabriel.

PS I understand jellyfish are now pretty common aroung Goa's beaches. Carry
some vinegar with you - can be useful for most jellyfish stings.

I disagree and don't feel that we should bring in regional sentiments
("any Goan worth his salt"... "a number of Indians") into a tragic
matter like death. It could happen to anyone. Hindsight is
perfect-vision, 20/20, as they say. It just takes a minute or two to
take a life-threatening decision. May this happen to fewer people.
What a waste of a productive life. And, in the meantime, may we have
the wisdom to build those structures that minimise the needless waste
of such lives!

Condolences to the young man's family. It could have also been any of ours! FN
