“Tribute to Agustina Bessa-Luís at Instituto Camões”
Instituto Camões, Panjim, is organizing a tribute to Agustina-Bessa Luís, one
of the Portugal´s most outstanding novelists. Agustina was born in 1922, in
Vila Meã (Douro region). Her childhood and youth were influenced by the Douro
river landscape, which she describes repeatedly in her later work. She was
awarded the most important literary prize of the Portuguese speaking world, the
“Prémio Camões” in 2004.
The exhibition «Agustina Bessa-Luís – Life and Work» will be inaugurated on
Saturday, 29th August, at 6.00 pm, by His Excellency the Cônsul General of
Portugal in Goa, Dr. Paulo Neves Pocinho, followed by a talk entitled «Agustina
Bessa-Luis and the Portuguese Contemporary Novel» delivered by Miguel Real, in
which the Portuguese writer and essayist will highlight the influence of the
“Great Dame” of Portuguese Literature on the modern generations of writers in
Portugal.
The “Francisco da Piedade Menezes” scholarship and the certificates for the
participants of the workshop «A Expressão Dramática, o Teatro e a Educação»,
held on 22th August 2009, will be awarded at the function.
The day after, Sunday, 30th August two films directed by Manoel de Oliveira and
based on Agustina Bessa-Luís´novels will be screened at the Instituto Camões
premises, Agva House, 9/32, Dr.Dada Vaidya Road, Panjim.
