[Goanet] Request for words for monkey in Konknni MAKODD is the right word. HETEM is another Makodd family Hetim (pl) are not usually seen in Goa but seen many around Bangalore, Hill stations, Bombay Elephanta Caves opp. Gate way or opp Taj. Etc At Amboli ghats or water fall near Goa, you see them many They are the one who sometimes snatch things like bags from your hand. They are the one you may usually feed with fruits like bananas. While going to Bangalore, they come right next to you train windows at some stations. They are the ones who eat their own lice (uvo) They are the one you sometime see at margao Pimpalkatta or any market where a migrant makes them to dance and then send them to collect money with a tray (aluminium dish) Or to be more precise, here are the three musketeers http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauksix/286727428/sizes/o/
In goa, ‘Makodd’ were seen only in jungles or road passing through hilly area etc. Now a day, Makodd are also seen in the villages on peoples houses etc. This is due to concretisation of Goan jungles/hills. Rampant mining also to blame. If you are dark faced (no offence), then your friends and other people may describe you as ‘Kalle Makodd’ Alternately, some may describe the same as.. Kalle hampri (African Black) Kalle Ingallo or Kollso (coal) Kalle Kavllo (crow) Kalle Kitt Kalle Gonsh (underneath of an earthen pot/pan etc) When laughing, one may say ‘Tum heteabaxen hansota’ We many have seen a monkey showing it back by pointing it’s finger.. as if trying to say ‘look, my back is red’ And hence we got a saying in Konkani.. ‘Makodd aplench bonk tambddem muntta’ We used it when a person tries to say he is always right etc When I was small, I used to brush my teeth wuth my fingere using ‘monky brand’ tooth powder. If someone’ face resemble a bit of monkey face, we may have said ‘makodd shap’ We were told , at school , we all come from Makodd (apes) We were also told at church we all come from Adam and Eve.
