Golden Jubilee celebration of St. Therese Church - Salmiya The Rector Major Rev. Fr. Pascual Chavez, the Superior General of the international Don Bosco Society who is on a short visit to Kuwait will be concelebrating a Mass together with Bishop Camilo Balin as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of St. Therese Church, Salmiya at 1800 hrs today (November 3, 2009).
Rev. Fr. Pascual Chavez then will attend a reception at 1900 hrs at the Indian English Academy School, Salmiya, before flying to India visiting the North East Region. The St. Therese Church which was inaugurated as Holy Redeemer Chapel in 1974 was born of a need that arose when residents from India began to converge on Salmiya and its neighbouring localities. The availability of Indian schools in the area was one of the reasons why a number of families settled here. Vast distances from Kuwait City (wherein is situated the Holy Family Cathedral), as well as in-sufficient transport facilities to and from the city might have contributed to a growing need for a place of worship so that the Catholic faithful could perform their weekly religious obligation. From a humble congregation of 40 faithful in 1959, the congregation now exceeds a thousand families! http://www.catholic-church.org/kuwait/salmiya.htm (GWNews)
