*MARGAO, NOV 15 * In a bid to keep a check on the influx of migrants in the coastal village, the Betalbatim villagers on Sunday demanded that the village Panchayat should license the leasing of premises by landlords after specifying the sanitary conditions and the police clearance of the tenants. The migrant issue dominated the gram sabha held on Sunday wherein members expressed concern over the presence of large number of migrants in the village. Members pointed out that premises have been leased out to tenants without complying with the mandatory sanitary conditions and demanded a stop to the activity. After much deliberation, the meeting resolved that the Panchayat keep a close track on the migrants and constituted a 14 member committee to study and look into the sanitary conditions of the premises housing the migrants, the legal status of the premises et al. The committee has been directed by the gram sabha to place the findings on the next gram sabha scheduled on November 13. In another resolution, the gram sabha demanded that all proposals for mega housing and hotel projects be placed before the gram sabha meeting before the file is processed by the Panchayat. A similar resolution was passed earlier and the same has been accepted by the Panchayat body. Sarpanch Minguel Pereira told Herald after the meeting that the panchayat would soon crack a whip on premises housing migrants without following the guidelines. “It has come to light that in some cases, more than 10 persons stay in a small room, when the space can accommodate only three persons”, the Sarpanch said, adding that in most cases, the migrants are housed by the landlords without sanitary and water facilities, creating nuisance and posing a health hazard. Replying to a question, the Sarpanch said that illegal structures which are used to house the migrants will be demolished. “Before December 13, the committee will inspect each and every house and study the sanitation and other facilities, or whether the structure is legal or illegal or the owner have been defaulting in the payment of house tax”, he said. Meanwhile, the gram sabha adopted a resolution to constitute child protection committee, which will meet shortly with children groups as well as representatives of the teachers and PTA.
