PANAJI: Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) will celebrate World Disabled Day with a disability awareness walk and a variety entertainment programme on December 7. A seminar on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will also be held on December 14. The disability awareness walk with the theme Do not give us a separate space. Make space for us on December 7 will start from the Head Post Office at 9.30 a.m. and conclude at the Azad Maidan, Panaji. In the evening there will be a variety entertainment programme with performances by the disabled from various NGOs for the disabled and sale of their products, release of a Konkani VCD Polio composed and sung by polio afflicted Amancio DSouza, performances from the VCD and the felicitation of outstanding disabled who have contributed to the society or have brought a name to Goa inspite of severe disability. The seminar on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities organized in association with the Directorate of Social Welfare will be held at the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) Convention Hall, Opposite Azad Maidan Panaji. It will be from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 pm and will be conducted by Mr Raju Waghmare and Malika from the India Centre for Human Rights, Mumbai and Mr Nilesh Singhjit, who had the privilege of attending the UN Convention. The seats for the seminar are limited to 75 persons. A free legal aid camp will also be held for the disabled on the same day from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the same venue. The venue has barrier free access for the disabled. Interested persons should give their names by December 11 by calling DRAG office during working hours. DRAG has tied up with the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Travel and Tourism Association of Goa and other organizations to provide employment opportunities to the disabled. DRAG is also pressing the government to fulfill the 3 percent quota for the disabled in government jobs at the earliest.
