At an impressive function this evening the two day Second "Konknni Romi Lipi
Sahitya & Sonskruti Sommelon" organised by the Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA)
got underway at the Frank Fernand nagar - Ravindra Bhavan indoor auditorium at
Curchorem today at 4.44 p.m
The function began with an impressive orchestra directed by Fr Nixon D Silva
followed by another musical beat group, a comedy skit by the Bacchan brothers,
another musical rendition by Quepechem Kirnna .
Earlier the Chief Minister Mr Digamber Kamat who was expected to inaugurate the
function did not turn up as he was away in New Delhi.In his absence the
Curchorem MLA Mr.Shyam Satardekar lit the traditional lamp in tow with the MLA
Quepem Mr Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar both guests of Honour on the ocassion
Besides the two MLA's the others present on the dais were Mr. Bonaventure D'
Pietro, Mr Tomazinho Cardozo, President, Tiatr Akademi of Goa, also the
Working President of the Conference Mr Premanand Lotlikar President DKA Mr
Willy Goes Fr. Manuel Gomes, Reception Committee Chairman.
Fr. Manuel Gomes in his welcome address impressed upon the gathering the need
to promote and feel proud of the Konknni language. He narrated the trials and
tribulation faced by Konkani right from the time Count of Alvor decreed in 1684
that the natives should not speak in Konknni. He specifically spelt out the
role Monsignor Sebastiao RudolfoDalgado who brought out the first Konknni
Portuguese dictionary in 1893 and Vaman Ragunath Xennoi Varde Valaulikar who
wrote 11 books in Konknni Roman script and 21 books in Konknni devanagari
script. Summing up he emphasised that there ought to be recognition for all
scripts . Given the fact that the New testament in Konknni Roman script had a
huge readership there is need to recognise this script too along with others.
The emphasis was to ensure that there was no discrimination owing to usage of
scripts.
Later cash awards of Rs.5000/- a shawl and a momento were presented tothose who
contributed to the literary and cultural works in Konknni Roman script. Most of
them hail from the Quepem Sanguem talukas.

his literary works.
Explaining the reason for naming the venue an organisor who spoke to this
writer at the venue informed that Fernand was a pioneer in the field of Konknni
cinema a native of Sanvordem . He is credited with films like " Amchem Noxib"
"Nirmonn etc
The stage for the ocassion has been named after another veteran tiatrist late
Albert Carvalho who rendered yeoman service to the field of tiatr and a native
of Sanvordem.
The stage was tastefully decorated and the brass band music at the entrance was
led by noted musician MrAbdonio Rodrigues provided an excellent environment for
the audience which had jam packed the auditorium.
A souvenir "Yadostik" was released by Mr Chandrakant (Babu ) Kavlekar which has
feature writings poems and song by Fr Manuel Gomes, Tomazinho Cardozo

There were several buyers for books in Roman script forsale at the venue
written by prominent writers and tiatrists also CD of Bachaan brothers.
A tiatr "Zayat Zage" by Prince Jacob was slated for late evening.
Todays function was graced by several prominent person like Dr Francisco
Colaco, Director of Information and Publicity Mr Menino Peres, several tiatrist
and others.
The second day deliberation begins at 10.00 a.m on 21st February, 2010.
