Hi Arwin: No one denies the importance of the migrant issue. The problem is what is the right solution. Perhaps, a solution is to force the employers (those who employ migrants) to bear the cost of their accomodation, and clear the slums in a phased manner in a few years. However, public opinion has to be built on this. And secondly, from the point of Goa getting sunk, which problem do you think is more serious ? Mining or migrants ? The indiscriminate taking away of Goan land in the name of mining (estimates say that there are abour 5000 trucks operating a day to take Goan soil abroad) is going to finish not just Goa but the Western Ghats too. The environmental impact will be fatal. Add to the fact, that Goans are involved in this business. Every other Goa in the mining belt is buying a truck to carry the soil. The latest is that mining is to begin in the lush green fields of Panchwadi. The village --- of only Goans --- is vertically split between mining and anti-mining groups. Finally, what do you think is the importance of creating "sustainable" jobs for Goans ? regards, Samir
