Tiatr Academy Goa
First Festival of Commercial Tiatrs

The unique dramatic form of Goa – the Tiatr - is the most popular dramatic form of Goa. This can be ascertained from the fact that each tiatr is staged on an average 100 to 150 times in different parts of Goa. There are over 22 commercial troupes which regularly stage tiatrs in Goa. Besides there are another 15 non-commercial dramatic troupes which contribute to the development of Tiatr through Tiatr competitions organized by Goa Kala Academy and other cultural organizations. Tiatrs are produced and staged in the villages on the occasion of feasts by the villagers too.

Tiatr Academy of Goa is of the opinion that although Tiatr is the most popular dramatic form of Goa yet it has to improve in some compartments of the presentation of Tiatrs namely Stage Setting, Light Effects, Back groundmusic, Script writing, etc. The ‘Kantar’ which is the integral part of tiatr also needs improvement in the quality of lyrics and originality in music. This festival is the first attempt of TAG in that direction.

Hence Tiatr Academy Goa has organized this Mega Festival of Tiatrs for the first time in the 117 years of History of Tiatr. The Festival cum Competition called “The First Popular Tiatr Festival 2009” has commenced from 22nd February 2010 at Joao Agostinho Fernandes Hall, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

All directors and script writers of the tiatrs presented in the festival will attend the discussion. The aim of this discussion will be to find out the positive and negative aspects of tiatrs and to make efforts to improve upon the drawbacks in the tiatrs if any. Other tiatr writers and directors as well as tiatr lovers can also attend the discussion.

Cash Awards besides Certificates will be awarded for performance, direction, acting, script writing, lyrics, singing, stage setting, light effects, background music, etc. TAG feels that the Festival gives an opportunity for directors and participants of Tiatrs in the Festival to make sincere efforts to minimize the drawbacks in the presentation of tiatrs.
