*MICKKY’S GF* AND a few stray thoughts on Mickky’s girlfriend who attempted to commit suicide. I fail to understand why the daily English newspapers insist on referring to the prominent politician from the South and are afraid to name Mickky. The story goes that Mickky met the lady in the Gulf where her husband was working. He seduced her with all kinds of promises, including that of marriage, though he has two children by his second common law wife. When Mickky’s latest girlfriend became pregnant, he tried to force her to abort the child. It was this that provoked her to consume an entire tube of the deadly Rattol, which is used to kill rats. Mickky’s girlfriend was shifted to a hospital in Mumbai. Later, for whatever reason, she was shifted again to a hospital in Thane. Mickky’s girlfriend is in a very serious condition. Apparently the Rattol has destroyed her liver and she needs a liver transplant. Which is why she has been shifted to the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, which is one of the few hospitals in the country which has facilities for a liver transplant. The police of course have been taking an unusual interest in the case. Initially, a case was registered against Mickky’s girlfriend on the charge of attempted suicide by the Maina-Curtorim police station. The police inspector in charge, Sidhant Shirodkar, went all the way to Mumbai to the nursing home in Thane to register her statement, but could not do so because she was in the ICU. The case was mysteriously shifted to the Sanguem police station, under Rajendra Raut Desai. Now, apparently, Desai has gone to Chennai to record the statement of Mickky’s girlfriend. It is clear that it was pressure from Mickky to abort the child that was responsible for her consuming Rattol which, in most cases, is fatal. In the case of Mickky’s girlfriend, it has destroyed her liver and she will not survive unless she is able to get a liver transplant. It would be poetic justice if Mickky’s liver was removed and given to her. Except that Mickky’s liver may not be suitable as it is pickled in too much alcohol. What I fail to understand is the reluctance of the police to file a case of abetment to suicide against Mickky Pacheco. We intend writing to the Goa Bench of the Mumbai High Court to direct the police to lodge a complaint of abetment to suicide against Mickky Pacheco. COMMENT: The poor thing will probably die unless she gets a liver donor (waiting for dead person's liver). The man will carry on with his life like nothing happened. He will make a donation to the Colva Church and this will be acknowledged at Sunday Mass. The woman is probably unconscious so how on earth will the Policeman get a statement from her, in Chenai? - waste of public money. The priests are encouraging the man by painting him as a do gooder, giving to charity does not wipe the slate clean. Further the Congregation could easily read the direction nuanced, as giving blessings to the man. It is time that the Church stopped having divorced people as Eucharistic Ministers; the Church should also discontinue the practice of having divorced persons reading from the pulpit. I am not taking a holier than thou attitude, this is the least that should be expected of honourable Goans! Doing works of Charity are not enough, restitution should be made. Lastly if the Church feels that it has to accept donations from unsavoury characters then please don't make a song and dance about it! -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.
