Dear de Souzaji,

Have you just woken up? This denigration was part of the anti-Goan
propaganda generated by the media - many decades ago. Research
Bollywood films and you will find the origin of this thought process.
Even look at the role of Dimple Kapadia's 'father' in Bobby.

This stereotyping of Goans by Bollywood has been well documented in an essay in the Mario Cabral e Sa-edited book *Location Goa*.

However, a wider complaint is that, in India, almost every second community (except the Punjabis, perhaps because they are the film-makers) tend to get stereotyped and portrayed in unflattering terms in Bollywood films. This is certainly true of the lungi-clad "Madrasi", the "ill-educated" Bihari, the Nepali "watchman", and also probably about the Marathi-speaking Maharashtrian, the dialect-speaking North Indian, among others.

Even Nehru thought little of Goans ....and referred to them as 'just
cooks and butlers'.

Could you give a reference for this, and in what context the comment was made? FN
