During the World Cup, I like remembering football players from the past, many of whom played for the love of the game. Here is a link to some reading on Garrincha. As well, there is a documentary on his career..way before big money came into the game.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrincha Too bad, the Goa FA never thought of organizing a small film festival of football films/documentaries. The game will be dead in Goa in a few years but while the interest is there, may have been nice to make use of the film screening venues. A city I lived in for sometime does that: a week before the WC, they have a 10 day football film festival. The attendance is surprisingly good........with all the hype around the sport, it draws in the crowds. As well, reading on football. Not too many interesting lit on football aside from the UK newspapers. However from many years ago, there is Tim Parks 'A Season with Verona '. Interesting read and Parks is an interesting writer (Englishman living in Italy). He followed Verona and its supporters around when they were in Serie A (Italian league). http://tim-parks.com/non-fiction/a-season-with-verona/
