WORLD KONKANI DAY
20th August, 2010

Eric Ozario ,
Chairman ,
ManddSobhann - Mangalore, India.

World Konkani Day is celebrated all over the world to commemorate the inclusion
of Konkani in the Eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution. It was on that
day in 1992, that Konkani was recognized as a National Language of India, by
its inclusion in the Eighth schedule.

It is indeed an event to celebrate because it has done us, Konkanis, proud.
Though we are only 1/200 of the entire Indian population, Konkani was
recognized as one among 18 National Languages from among more than 2000 and odd
Indian languages. It speaks for the greatness and completeness of our beloved
mother tongue, Konkani.

As the President of the KarnatakaKonkani Sahitya Academy, during the 3 years of
my tenure, I had brought together all Konkaniorganisations in and around
Mangalore to celebrate ‘KonkaniManyata Divas’ (Konkani Recognition Day – as we
used to call it), on August 20, every year, in a grand celebration. Last year,
through my organization ManddSobhann, we felicitated ‘Extraordinary Konkani
Persons’, in many age categories, for simply being extraordinary Konkani
people. This year, we will be celebrating World Konkani Day in Mumbai, bringing
together Konkani people of every denomination, with pomp and grandeur, as the
Curtain Raiser of the World Convention will also unfold that day.

We congratulate every Konkani on this ‘World Konkani Day’ and call upon all
Konkanis – “KonknniUloi, KonknniFuloi. KonknniBoroi, KonknniUroi”. Let’s
respect our variety and seek Konkani unity.
Long live Konkani!

                                 TOGETHER for KONKANI !!
                                                                   wherever we
may be - UNITY in Diversity.
