It was an exciting penultimate day at the All Goa Major Ranking Badminton Tournament organized by Mormugoa Badminton Club at Deepvihar High School Indoor Badminton Courts, with several semi final matches going the full distance.
In the Mens Doubles event, Parag Chauhan and Darwin Baretto punctured the balloons of Sunny Sawant and Sharmad Mahajan, thumping them 17-21, 23-21, 21-16 in three tight sets. The second seeds, who had lost the Title clash to the same opponents in the previous Tourney, looked down and out in the third set, trailing 9-14 at one stage, but played aggressively towards the closing stages to register a remarkable victory over the youngsters. In the Finals, they will lock horns with the top seeds Floyd Araujo and Navneet Nasnodkar who beat Sandeep Kanji and Mohammed Sheikh 21-17, 21-18 in the other semis. The Mens Singles event will be a clash between the two top seeds Floyd Araujo and Sunny Sawant. Both Floyd and Sunny were in cruise mode and were never really threatened by their opponents. Floyd beat Ankush Patil 21-14, 21-16 while Sunny beat former State Champion Sandeep Kanji 21-12, 21-15. In the Under 19 Girls singles, top seed Anushka Kuvelkar sealed her place in the Finals with a comfortable 21-6, 21-10 win over Pranjal Chimulkar while in the other semis, the tenacious Malati Dani fought hard to oust Astha Gupta 18-21, 21-19, 21-19. In the Under 16 Boys category, Chinmay Kamat beat Pranav Silimkhan 21-12, 15-21, 27-25 in an exciting edge-of-the-seat thriller where fortunes fluctuated from set to set and point to point. But the day’s loudest cheers belonged to Pratith Naik who ended Rahul Chandrashekar’s dream run of 3 consecutive Tournament Titles in the other semis, with a stunning win over the top seed. Pratith lost the first set 17-21 but came back strongly to win the next two 21-18, 21-18. The Finals will be held on Sunday, September 5, at 5 pm. Shri P.C. Parida, Dy.
