The residents had moved the Bombay high court seeking action against the illegal hawkers. However, an intervention plea has been submitted by a local resident, Desmond D’souza, on behalf of the hawkers. The matter will come up for hearing on Wednesday. The first petition was filed by Lilian Paes and Maria D’souza on August 18. Members of the Mount Mary and Kane Road ALM, they claimed thatmore than 500 hawkers encroached on 12 lanes for ten days, and the BMC does not take any action against them. As per a resolution by the BMC, only 165 hawkers are allowed on four lanes for the eight days of the fair. What’s interesting is that the man who is pleading on behalf of the hawkers in Maria’s husband! “This petition filed by my wife Maria and Lilian Paes against hawkers is communally biased against Maharashtrian hawkers. Members of the ALM are distinguishing between communities. While some hawkers are from Goa and South India, 50% of the hawkers are Maharashtrians. How can you call them illegal, when their grandfathers have sold religious items during the fair?” said Desmond. “There are also false allegations made that ambulances cannot enter the lanes. We get passes for rickshaws to enter buildings. Ashiana building, where Lilian Paes lives, had no complaints for 25 years.I am seeking justice for hawkers. They are not Bangladeshis to be illegal,” said Desmond. Maria, however, said, “Our writ isn’t against the hawkers. It’s against the authorities who have failed to bring organisation [into the festival] and this may have hurt the hawkers. It is not our intention to be against Maharashtrians or any religious group.” ===========
