Debate Goan identity at Kuwait convention TNN, Nov 1, 2010, 05.44am IST
The Goan Cultural Centre Kuwait is working hard to host a successful Global Goan Convention 2010 next month. At past conventions very few Goans raised what I think is the most critical and serious issue facing the state today-the deterioration of Goa's Identity with respect to its land, environment, culture, language and the Goan demographic majority. NRI Goans generally appear to be unaware and unconcerned about Goan issues. There appears to be strong disconnect as to what NRI Goans appear to do overseas and the bigger picture of the real threat to Goa, Goans and the identity.
NRI Goans are in some sort of denial mode that any threat exists, when actually the threat to our prized identity is very real and serious. If we do not act soon, our identity will be extinguished within a few years. If we lose our identity in Goa then overseas Goan associations, events, football tournament, tiatrs, social events, dances, conventions will be irrelevant. While previous conventions have been disappointing with respect to the fact that the NRI Goan community had still not woken up, delegates at Kuwait need to bring up this issue and send out a strong message to Goa and Goans that NRI Goans recognize this threat to the land and are serious about doing something to address the same.
