Chaka Chak hasn't made Goa shine yet TNN, Feb 17, 2011, 07.33am IST The ban on plastic below 40 microns thickness, and the crackdown on shops by the municipal authorities, have not yet had any visible impact on the condition of Goa roads and street corners where the "status quo ante" continues to persist.
Plastic bags still litter the cities, towns and villages as before, along with plastic bags of the 40 micron variety and thermocole packing material, which hitherto were absent. Neither the public, nor the panchayats, seem to bother about the gravity of the situation. The Goa "Chaka Chak" campaign which started on an encouraging note with much fanfare, has unfortunately not yet produced the desired effects as envisaged, and their presence in other parts of Goa has still to be felt, where the scourge of plastic waste still continues to haunt the residents. We need to move more swiftly in the matter if we cherish any hopes of seeing Goa shining and returned to its pristine beauty, if this is what "Chaka Chak" is meant to be.
