Goa Chitra to celebrate International Women’s Day - Tuesday, March 8, 2011
March 8, 2011 marks the centenary of International Women’s Day,
signifying the rise of radical ideologies concerning the oppression of
women and inequalities, and challenging older paradigms of patriarchy
and archaic views. The Day has assumed greater significance ever since
the UN declared the International Year of Women in 1975, and the
following decade as the Decade for Women. Women have since then become
more vocal, empowered and active in campaigning for change. The
International Women’s Day marks the celebration of the economic, social,
cultural and political achievements for women globally.
To commemorate the Day, Goa Chitra, an ethnographical museum situated in
Benaulim will host a series of events starting Tuesday, March 8 to March
12, 2011.
At 5.30pm, a panel discussion – Women in Contemporary India-- will bring
together women from different fields to address the issues of gender
equality. The speakers are:
Adv. Subhalaxmi Naik (leading advocate) - Women and Legal Rights in Goa
Ms. Auda Viegas (women and human rights activist)- Women, Empowerment
and Role of Self-help Groups
Ms. Devika Sequeira (senior journalist)- Women and Media
Ms. Aldina Gomes (psychologist and lecturer, Carmel College)- Concerns
of Young Goan Women
Dr. Helga Gomes (scientist)- Women and Concerns of Global Environment
The panel discussion shall be moderated by Dr. Savia Viegas (art
historian, artist and writer)
The panel discussion will be followed by a film “The Kids are All Right”
presented by Saxtti Films. The film is directed by Lisa Cholodenko with
actors Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo.
This is a hugely enjoyable and one of the breezier films of 2011. It is
a very American film, which pokes fun at a normal family. Set in Los
Angeles, the film revolves around teenage siblings Laser and Joni who
are interested in tracking down the donor whose sperm their lesbian
mothers Nic () and Jules () had used to get pregnant. The search leads
to a laid-back, free-spirited organic farmer and the hell breaks loose.
Nominated for 4 Oscar Awards 2011, Won 2 Golden Globe Awards 2011,
Nominated for 3 British Academy Film Awards 2011.
The programme is open to the public and shall commence at 5.30 p.m. on
the 8th of March 2011 at the Goa Chitra amphi- theatre. For details and
registration contact 08322772910 or 08326570877 between 9 AM and 6 PM or

About Geetu Hinduja
Geetu wears several hats: she is a singer/songwriter who accompanies
herself on the guitar; she is an art consultant who runs her own
business; she is a mother of three and has a young grandson too.
Geetu has been performing for several years. Her music celebrates
emancipation, strength and empowerment for women. As a musician who has
been impacting the Asian Diaspora; she is equally at home with original
compositions as well as singing covers of artists that encompass the
genre of western folk, soft rock and alternative. Her forte is to take
the audience on a magical journey that talks about love, hope, fear,
courage and fortitude.
In 1993, Geetu released an album titled ‘Dancing Free’, and she is
currently working on another.
In Geetu’s other avatar she runs The Fine Art Company. She is a
qualified Interior Designer and her roots began at the J. J. School of arts.
She started the The Fine Art Company in November 1998. It started off as
a physical gallery space. Apart from hosting exhibitions; it
successfully brought together people from different disciplines to
interact. The gallery also hosted a series of slide/talks, poetry and
book readings, play readings and vocal performances of different genres,
Geetu now runs The Fine Art Company as an Art consultancy wherein she
sources work for clients and continues to promote art and artists that
she believes in by hosting shows at different venues all over the country.
Combining and pursuing all her interests is a challenging task. However
Geetu feels that the two professions she pursues feed off one another
and help to balance her outlook and output more effectively.
