The * * * *article that appeared on Herald (pg 7, dated 30 March 2011) in this regard, is reproduced for your kind * * * *reference...* * * *Leasing of ground is fraud- BCC Football Academy* Opposition to government’s decision to lease the SAG football ground to Churchill Brothers football team had its echo in Benaulim. Director of BCC Football Academy Dr Hubert Gomes Tuesday, 29th March 2011, demanded that the fraudulent 33 years lease of Cana-Benaulim ground at Vadi should be revoked immediately. “It is a fraud against the people of Benaulim, almost amounting to a day-light robbery”, he said. “If the government does not cancel this illegal lease with immediate effect, there is no way I am going to remain a silent spectator. I will do all that is necessary to fight this fraud on Benaulim”, he warned. Incidentally, it was Dr Hubert Gomes who had first brought this ‘illegality’ to the notice of the public, during his media interaction way back in November 2010. “How can the Government lease out this good ground to a private Club ‘for peanuts’? As it is there are no proper football playing facilities in our 'football crazy' village", Dr Gomes pointed out, after explaining the various difficulties his young players have to face at his Benaulim based Football Academy. "Good quality Ground is a must to train young boys. Ours is a ten years old football academy started by Mr Antonio Mascarenhas 'to save young boys' from going astray. Thanks to his selfless efforts, today we have four GFA affiliated teams (in different age groups). If the Goa government is really serious about promoting football in Goa, it should support our efforts, by allowing us to use this Cana-Benaulim Ground, as we were doing all these years. How can the Government take this ground from our poor children and give it to a rich, family run private Club?" Dr Hubert questioned. Dr Hubert Gomes who has acquired all the necessary documents of this ‘lease agreement’ under RTI Act pointed out that the terms and conditions of this agreement are very biased, favouring Churchill Brothers and totally against the short and long term interests of the people of Benaulim. “People of Cuncolim had protested against the 'land grab Football Academy" a few months ago. The hurriedly done illegally leasing of our Cana-Benaulim ground is another case of ‘perfect land grabbing’. ”, he warned. To assist the people of Benaulim Constituency, Dr Hubert Gomes has also announced the launch of SAAG... a Free Legal Aid Cell at Benaulim Community Centre.
