I guess the Indian culture of addressing elders with respect, has crept into the 'India English'. Among Hindus, it has always been, 'kaka/kaki', 'mauso/maushi' and many others. Among Catholics, it used to be similar. No elder was addressed by his/her or 1st name, ever. This was when Konkani was THE spoken language! When the English language started creeping up in the 60s and 70s, all the Konkani terminology started being transposed into the English that we started using. We used to greet our neighbors with a Good morning/afternoon/evening, which if we did not do, got yelled at! Even the neighbours used to point it out to you, if you did not wish them! The western world on the other hand, accepted the usage of Mr or Mrs.XYZ or even the 1st name of the elders. Whether or not the Goan/Indian society will adopt the English way, only time will tell.
