Compare Uncle. 2001 Neil Humphreys Notes from an Even Smaller Island 29 .. I have yet to meet anyone who is ‘harder’ than a Singaporean auntie. Believe me, they are rock solid and their resolute attitude and lust for life is something that the younger, greedier generation can learn from. A Singaporean auntie or uncle can be anyone who is from the older generations, like an English old age pensioner (OAP), and the term is used out of affection and respect. http://www.singlishdictionary.com/singlish_A.htm#auntie COMMENT : Great ! FN has now highjacked the issue from Indian English to Chinese / East Asian English. I have not stated in my posts that in Indian English it does not imply the same. What I have put forth is that the terminology is not acceptable by standard English. Why is it so that Standard English is used and taught in Schools and not the local jargon? When journalists or the Fourth Estate do not maintain the standard of a language that is used in the communication, language corruption sets in. Why can't the English spoken by some of our ministers be labeled as a dialect? The 'grounds' for which can always be established! And when journalists and the Fourth Estate accept linguistic modification as a dialect, they will also succumb to political influence on languages. Will FN accept English in Devanagri script as a dialect if started in the near future by our Goan politicians as a compromise for the ongoing MOI conflict? And Santosh has produced references from websites of Amazon.com in support of his contention; sites that he would shun as commercial sites when others refer. Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.
