The Treaty of Bassein was signed by Sultan Bahadur [1] of Gujarat and Portugal [2] on December 23, 1534 while on board the galleon São Mateus. Based on the terms of the agreement, the Portuguese Empire[3] gained control of the city of Bassein [4], as well as its territories, islands, and seas. The Mumbai Islands under Portuguese control include Colaba [5], Old Woman's Island, Mumbai [6], Mazagaon [7], Worli [8], Matunga [9], and Mahim [10]. Salsette [11], Daman and Diu[12], Thane [13], Kalyan [14], and Chaul [15] were other territories controlled and settled by the Portuguese.
