Bhakti Shoots into the Lead
Goa Carbon Brand Ambassador and Asian Junior Girls' Champion Bhakti
Kulkarni (8 points) of Goa shot into the lead by outplaying
International Woman Master R. Sai Meera(7) of Tamil Nadu in the 10th and
penultimate round of National Woman Challengers' Chess Championship
being played at Nehru Stadium, Chennai today.
Bhakti is followed by A.G. Nimmy (Kerala), C H Divyashri (AP) and Asian
Junior runners up R. Bharathi (TN) on 7.5 points. Top twenty from this
Championship will qualify for the National Premier Championship to be
played at Mumbai in October, 2011.
Bhakti, who is experimenting some new ideas with the Black pieces has
conceded four draws but the Asian Junior Champion is relentless in
attack with White pieces. She has won all of her games with White pieces
in the last three tournaments played in the Czech Republic, Sri Lanka
and Chennai(India).
Sai Meera, who was sharing the lead with Bhakti overnight, tried to
attack Bhakti's King by pushing her pawns dangerously forward. However
Bhakti's counterattack through her Queen and Rook was lethal and Sai
Meera resigned the game after she could not stop Bhakti's pawn from
Queening.
The Goan Champion may meet Woman FIDE Master Swati Mohota (West Bengal)
in the final round on Sunday morning when a draw will be enough for the
GCL Brand Ambassador to clinch the Championship.
