Dr Bernard founded the National Abortion Rights Action League in 1969. Within five years of ferocious propaganda, he and his associates had convinced the US Supreme Court to issue a decision that legalised abortion in the famous Roe and Wade case in 1973. This led to other countries legalising abortion. He had been involved in abortion since 1945, when he aborted his pregnant girlfriend. He was in charge of the world's largest abortion clinic situated in New York. He boasted that he was personally responsible for 75,000 abortions. This Jewish agnostic died this year on February 21, 2011 — as a fervent Catholic! What happened? It's a case of science converting someone. Whether the foetus had life in the womb was a religious question, not a scientific one, was his justification for abortion. But then came the new invention of Ultra Sound. And it became most evident to him that what was in the womb could suck its thumb and do other human things. Slowly, he began distancing himself from his clinic, and stopped abortions altogether. His conversion was complete when he made a famous film entitled The Silent Scream that showed (through ultrasound technology) the agony a child suffers during an abortion. But he was tortured with guilt, till he met an Opus Dei priest who assured him that Jesus had died so that his sins could be completely forgiven and he could have peace of mind. Before he died, he wrote an article to show how he managed to push his agenda through when he was an abortionist. He showed how public opinion could be manipulated. It's good to quote from this article just to show how polls and the media can distort issues. "The first key tactic was to capture the media. We persuaded the media that the cause of permissive abortion was a liberal, enlightened, and sophisticated one. We simply fabricated the results of fictional surveys. We had announced to the media that we had taken polls, and that 60 per cent of Americans were in favour of permissive abortion. We aroused enough sympathy to sell our programme of permissive abortion by fabricating the number of illegal abortions done annually in the US. The actual figure was approaching 100,000, but the figure we gave repeatedly to the media was 1,000,000. Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public. The number of women dying from illegal abortion was around 200-250 annually. The figure we constantly fed to the media was 10,000. Another myth we fed to the public was that legalising abortion would only mean that abortions that were done illegally would be done legally. But the fact is that now abortion is being used as a primary method of birth control. The second tactic was to attack the Catholic Church (the largest single religion in the US) for its "socially backward ideas". We fed the media such lies as "We all know that all the opposition to abortion comes from the hierarchy, and not from most Catholics, and polls prove time and again that most Catholics want abortion law reform." The inference of this tactic was that there were no non-Catholic groups opposing abortion. The fact that not only Catholic groups, but also non-Catholic groups, as well as non Christian groups, were opposed to abortion was suppressed. The third key tactic was the denigration and suppression of all scientific evidence that life begins at conception. A favourite pro-abortion tactic is to insist that the definition of when life begins is impossible, that the question is a theological or moral or a philosophical one, anything but a scientific one. But modern foetology makes it undeniably evident that life begins at conception. As a scientist I know, not believe, that human life begins at conception".
