He lives in New York for part of the year and in India when he's writing. In order to write his newest book, "River Of Smoke," he taught himself Cantonese and he learned how to sail. Amitav Ghosh is a Bengali Indian author and a distinguished professor of comparative literature at Queens College, City University of New York. His books include "The Glass Palace," "Sea of Poppies" and "The Imam and the Indian." In 2007, the Indian government awarded him Padma Shri, and in 2009, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
