Hi Selma and all Goans, I would like to address one point since it appears to suggest that wife battery does not/could not/may not happen in posh areas, upon reading these the last two sentences: "And if you can describe the area around Hira building mid-century, I would be very grateful. Was it a rough neighbourhood? were there brothels in that area? Hard-drinking men? Men given to violence and battering their wives. Or was it a posh area??"
IF SUCH WAS NOT the case/conjecture. then ignore and accept my apologies. I am also not being Mumbai specific. A highly motivating sense of space and place, with all attendant luxuries, as also the esteem that comes with living in high-end/posh neighborhoods, does not/appears not to, in any way exclude the reality and existence of wife battery. The sad reality as we know, is that no lived environment is immune to males who are given to beating their wives, girlfriend, lovers, etc. It is just that over time certain individuals decide what they stand to loose by displaying such behavior. Others carry it on in other ways minus the beatings. In contemporaneity, this is also true also of young men, as also older school going children who do the same to their girl friends. I can believe that such is happening in India. We are no different. Although this addition extended what I pointed above, the point is that posh areas are not immune to domestic violence (DV). This we learnt is a huge fallacy among women. Cecilia's dissertation was on the following topic. Cecilia Castelino, City University of New York, "Battered Women's Relationship to the Housing in Which They Were Battered: Institutional Programs and Noninstitutional Strategies Some Battered Women Use To Stay Put in Their Housing and Get Their Batterers To Move Out." Can anyone tell me what the WACI in Bombay would stand for? This would have been circa mid 20th century. Maybe it is still in existence whatever it is. ? Also can anyone recall a Bombay Womens Institute of Needle Art and Domestic Science in Hira Bldg. And if you can describe the area around Hira building mid-century, I would be very grateful. Was it a rough neighbourhood? were there brothels in that area? Hard-drinking men? Men given to violence and battering their wives. Or was it a posh area? ? I do plan to visit the area but I can't visit the time period. ?
