basilio Monteiro wrote: Should the Church and the Priests Dabble in Politics? In public life PRUDENCE is an important virtue, which is unfortunately in short supply. It is a legitimate question that people must raise when priests get prominently involved in the political life of the community/society. Prudence is about the HOW a priest gets involved in the political life of the society. It is good, and it is important to challenge the MANNER of the involvement, and not the WHY he is involved. Thus the very People of God must hold its leader, the priest, accountable, about the MANNER of leadership (involvement in political life). This public accountability will help the priests to assess and adjust theira involvement in matters of politics, and thus promote the Kingdom of God, where Justice, Love and Peace reigns, or least strives to reign…. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basilio Monteiro Had priests followed the words of Jesus Christ and behaved according to his example, there would be: 1) No more people left in the world to convert 2) No nations and no need for politicians. As for the question of should a priest dabble in politics, I think the answer has always been abundantly clear. A lot of priests aspire to be politicians. No politician ever changes his mind to aspire becoming a priest.
