PANAJI: In an interesting development that could have some bearing on the state
politics ahead of the March 3 elections to the state assembly, the All India
Trinamool Congress has decided to contest the elections as a separate entity in
Goa.
The decision to contest elections in Goa was announced by the Trinamool general
secretary, Mr Mukul Roy in Kolkata, who also said that Dr Wilfred de Souza, a
former chief minister of Goa, has joined the second largest party in the United
Progressive Alliance, which is currently ruling in West Bengal.
The All India Trinamool Congress chairperson, Ms Mamata Banerjee, has
accordingly appointed Dr de Souza on Sunday to head the Goa unit of her party.
Dr de Souza told The Navhind Times that he has been asked by the Trinamool
central leader, to form the state unit in Goa and that he would accordingly
start enlisting the members of the party.
As regards to a question on whether TMC would contest the forthcoming
elections, he said that Trinamool party could contest in some of the
constituencies and that people of Goa would have an alternative to the ruling
Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. He said that he has got a
forum to work for the interest of the Goans.
Dr de Souza, who off late has not been associated with any political party
after he quit the Nationalist Congress Party, said that he would have to begin
from the scratch and build Trinamool into a strong force and provide the people
of Goa an alternative to corrupt Congress and communal Bharatiya Janata Party.
