Established in 1963, St. Xavier’s College is one of the premier institutions of higher education in the State of Goa. Recently, it was conferred upon the Best College Award by Goa University, besides being awarded the status of College with Potential for Excellence by UGC and Grade A by NAAC.

The higher education scenario is undergoing a change with the Human Resource Development Ministry setting up a National Commission for Higher Education and Research. A National Commission for Knowledge has also been constituted.

Today, the chief focus lies on education and, in particular, higher education, in order to empower the young generation towards the path of progress. Education is the key factor in the national development. According to the World Bank Report, nations with higher knowledge and superior technology are found to be economically secure.

One of the features of higher education is research. Therefore, much stress is being laid on research at all levels and that is why the entire system of education right from the primary to the university level is being overhauled. The industrial sector too encourages research activity towards the upgradation of technology and consequent productivity of superior quality of goods and services.

Prof. P. Balaram, Director of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in his lecture on the theme ‘Research and Higher Education : Indian Challenges” delivered on the occasion of 25th Foundation Day of Goa University, opined that an ideal university is “one that has good teaching and research background”. He further observed that “ teaching and research are the two sides of the same coin”. He also stressed the need to introduce research projects at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

St. Xavier’s College has given lot of importance to research activity; till date 20 teachers have successfully been awarded PhD. Degree, and 28 M.Phiil. Degree. Happily, 10 more Lecturers are about to complete PhD. Programme while 8 teachers are in the process of registering for Ph.D.

A good number of seminars, workshops, sponsored by U.G.C. and other agencies, are being conducted in the college on most recent topics at the state and national levels. It is worth to mention that the faculties have successfully completed research projects sponsored by U.G.C. and Directorate of Science and Technology, Goa.

The Research and Development Cell, set up in the college, is monitoring the research activity. The cell has to its credit a research based journal entitled, SPECTRUM, which is published annually.
