Alemaos blame everyone but themselves

MARGAO: Outgoing Chief Minister Digambar Kamat plotted against me”, “The church worked against me”, “Salcete didn’t like family raj while north Goa did”. These were Churchill Alemao’s rants after he was resoundly defeated by the people of Navelim, while his daughter Valanka was humiliated in the erstwhile Alemao stronghold of Benaulim.

And above all, the sour loser from Varca blamed the electronic voting machines. “I cannot believe that Valanka and I have been defeated in the elections. Our supporters are shocked to hear about our defeat as the ground reality was in our favour”, he claimed.

Replying to a question, he said that EVMs (electronic voting machines) are not being used even in advanced countries since they are open to manipulation, adding that he would petition the Election Commission to revert to the manual system of casting ballots. “We should have won, but we lost because of the EVMs”, he asserted.

Churchill, also took off his gloves to land punches on outgoing Chief Minister Digambar Kamat. “The election results would have been different for the Congress had the high command replaced Kamat six months before the polls on the mining issue.”

“We had demanded a change in leadership when the chief minister was facing the heat on the mining issue, but the high command did not respond. The mining issue had a major effect on the Congress party. Kamat used the police force against me and my family in the elections”, he said, adding that “ all this would not have happened if the house was dissolved prior to the polls.”

He also blamed a section of the clergy for the downfall of the Congress party in the elections. “ The people of Navelim did not backstab me. In fact, I am indebted to the people of Navelim and Benauluim, but a section of the clergy is responsible for the Congress downfall across the state”, he told newsmen on Wednesday.

When asked what could have be the possible reasons over the decision of the clergy to work against the Congress, Churchill said “ Nearly 80 per cent of the clergy have worked against the Congress. I cannot say why they have worked against the Congress. May be they were happy with the BJP government. I only pray to God that the BJP does their work now”, he said.

When his attention was drawn to the anti- Congress wave in the state, Alemao shot back “ There might have been a wave, but I was strong in Navelim”, while blaming a section of the clergy behind the anti- Congress wave.

Asked about his political future, Alemao said he is a relaxed man now, adding there’s still four years to go for the next elections.

The reality, however, is that he has been sent home packing by the people of Goa.
