Averyl Sasha Pinto: Xit-Koddi takes pride in finding little stars of Goa in Bahrain, and the aptitude we come across in our little Goan stars never ceases to astound us. To adorn this column of our second anniversary issue is a sweet, friendly and intelligent girl - Averyl Sasha Pinto. We spotted Averyl, when her photo appeared in the local press among the toppers of AISSE (Xth CBSCE) exams of 2011-12. She scored distinction with A1 in all subjects of the board exams and featured in the merit list of the Indian School. She had a strong educational foundation at the Sacred Heart School, where she scooped academic awards every year. She moved to the Indian School on completion of Senior 2 at the SHS. Averyl, with a flair for music has passed with distinction the 6th grade of her piano exams conducted by Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music of London, U.K. She is continuing her love for music in grade 7 at the Bahrain Music Institute. Our little star, Averyl is the member of Young Orator’s Gavel Club (affiliate of toastmasters international) meeting every Friday at the Indian Club. A Competent Gavelier, having won many prizes in club competitions, she is currently holding the post of Vice-President Education of this club and has already been nominated as the President of the YOGC for the next term. Averyl is the proud daughter of former Young Goans Club hockey player Martinho and Marushka Pinto, from one of the fastest developing towns of Goa, Porvorim. Her sisters Anabelle (Senior 1) and Anthea (Senior 3) are students of the SHS. In recreational activities Averyl loves to play chess and badminton. She uses her free time to read books and listen to music. Xit-Koddi wishes this twinkling star of Goa in Bahrain, who is presently in the XI Grade-Science at Indian School, a bright and blooming future. Aadhaar (UID) Card. Going to Goa on holidays ? You are bound to hear about the Aadhaar card. What is this Aadhaar card. This is a new government scheme, likely to make life easier for Indians. Back home in India, we are asked for a range of documents by a range of agencies – from government offices to banks, schools, colleges, electricity and phone companies and the police. The Unique Identification (UID) or Aadhaar card, is a new initiative by the Govt. of India. The issuing authority, UID Authority of India, will create a central database of these card numbers (12 digit) and link to it basic demographics and biometric information such as photograph, 10 fingerprints and iris of each individual. For the benefit of our readers, we provide a link below that gives full details of Aadhaar. You can also book online appointment for registration in Goa at this link. http://www.myaadhaarcard.in/what-is-aadhaar/Xit-Koddi understands that the Indian Government intends to make Aadhaar card mandatory for everyone so that the identity of all Indians including NRI’s can be established under one roof. So, if you are going on holidays - make a little time to make your Aadhaar Card that will be of adhar to you in the future. >From The Editor Bahrain Goans News Readers Write Taking You to Goa Little Stars of Goa in Bahrain Religious Corner Just Kidding - Konkani Azo & Bozo - Konkani Footprints of Goans in Bahrain Once Upon a Time in Bahrain Sports & Games Santan 'Barfi' movie choupak oita. It is indeed a joy to find members of our community indulge in several activities to maintain our traditions and culture on this foreign land. Xit-Koddi is pleased to bring you one such personality under this column. She is Maria Conceicao Periera.. Maria, who is in Bahrain for the last 19 years, has gained a good appreciation within the community with her works in cultural, religious and literary fields. A legionary from the age of 10 in Goa, she joined the Legion of Mary in 1996 at the Sacred Heart Church (SHC), Bahrain. She has a good record with the legionaries, having served as an officer for 6 years, as vice-president of Junior Legion and treasurer of Senior Legion over a period of time. Maria, is also a member of the SHC choir. Nonetheless, her spry particpation is through the Konkani Community of SHC, where she is the member of the core committee. Maria, has always strived to bring a colour and taste of our culture and traditions to the events of this group. In the recent past, she choreographed ‘Mando’ singing at one of the events, which was highly complimented by the audience (th picture of the group appears here). In her spare time, Maria depicts her love for our language by composing konkani poems. She has the distinction of being the first woman to release a book of konkani poems in Bahrain. Goenchi Girestkai Part 1 and Part 2 are the two books, she released in a span of two years. In her poems, she has highlight the traditional occupations of Goa that are slowly disintegrating. Maria, a graduate with economics has come up a hard way of life, sharing household responsibilites from the age of 19, when she lost her father. She used to give tuitions in her village of Arossim, Cansaulim and she feels proud to see many of her students working in Bahrain. Maria, herself arrived in Bahrain in May 1993 to join her husband Hilary, and they are blessed with two daughters Oshlana and Merilyn (see the fly picture above). She took up employment as a secretary and left as Adminstrative Manager after serving Hasan Mansouri Group for 15 years. She is presently enjoying her job with a Canadian company at the Bahrain Financial Harbour. Asked about her message to Bahrain Goans, she said "We come to foreign land to work for our living. Remember this and help the less fortunate ones also. Stay united and be active to keep our Goan culture and traditions alive. They are more precious than silver and gold and share your talents without any barriers" she concluded.
