THE GOA GOVERNOR CALLS FOR GOA TO BE BOSTON OF INDIA at CII Higher Education 
Summit: 

 

CII Commits to Faculty Development Program throughout the State

 

Panaji : "Goa has the potential to be the prime education hub and should be 
known as the BOSTON OF INDIA" These were the words said by HE Bharat Vir 
Wanchoo, Governor of Goa as he was speaking at the 1st Higher Education Summit 
organized by CII in association with Government of Goa which witnessed 
overwhelming turn out of Education institute owners, principal, faculty and all 
stakeholders across the State. He also stated that Goa indeed has the right mix 
of stakeholders who can enable this change.

 

The Key dignitaries at the inaugural along with HE Bharat Vir Wanchoo, Governor 
of Goa and The Chancellor of Goa University, Hon. Secretary of State, Technical 
& Higher Education, Mr. Keshav Chandra, Chairman CII Goa, Anil Kher and Atul 
Pai kane, and Mr. Shrinivas Dempo, of Dempo Education Trust. 

 

HE BV Wanchoo also emphasised on Need for training and up scaling faculty. Push 
the stake holders to move out of comfort zone, need for improving PhD & 
Research facility in the Colleges and universities. HE BV Wanchoo also 
mentioned about Goa's Potential for up scaling Agriculture economy. Research 
and technology should be used to promote produce and that younger generation 
should take up agriculture as a lucrative business.

 

The impending need for changing the way education is doled out has coerced CII 
to look at bringing about a new perspective to enhance the Quality of education 
across the nation since last decade. It is time that Education sector moves 
into the expansion mode and is equally scaled up to be more inclusive so as to 
reach out to a larger chunk of the population and power the growth engine of 
the economy of the State and Nation.

 

CII committed series of faculty development program in key sectors, soft skills 
development, and different methods of teaching. It will be conducting a barrage 
of individual program at various colleges and add on the momentum gained 
through this initial summit

 

CII Chairman, Anil Kher mentioned that Itwas indeed humbling to receive such 
personal focus and attention given by HE Bharat Vir Wanchoo, Hon Chief 
Minister, Mr. Parrikar and Sec Education Mr. Keshav Chandra. Their zeal and 
personal commitments to this noble cause of making a difference to Goa's 
economy through the Education Channel is a path breaking move and we all here 
today are witness to a Great Change Agenda for our beloved State.

 

Hon Secretary of Higher & Technical Education, Mr. Keshav Chandra, the 
initiator of this entire Summit, made a very informative presentation 
emphasising on GER (gross enrolment ratio) and highlighted many facts and 
figures of the Education scenario in the country and state and also threw light 
on global benchmarks as well. 

 

Mr. Shrinivas V Dempo, Chairamn CII WR and Chairman Dempo Group, reiterated the 
need for having a bigger vision for Goa in terms of Education and mentioned 
that just as in the corporate, the profits need to be redefined for the 
education sector also and it needs to be pumped back into the system. 

 

Heads of premium institutes like Symbiosis, COEP, UGC were present and had many 
brainstorming sessions highlighting change stories and steps taken in their 
institutes towards curriculum revision, institute autonomy. 

 

The Inaugural session drove the point that Goa has no option than creating 
better equipped students if we are to keep progressing sustainably.

 

Session 1. - There is a need to revise curriculum in most courses as it has not 
been revised for about 30 years. Academic Autonomy is also very important 
according to bringing in better education. The university is ready. We have 
invited the BITS Pilani Registrar to tell us how under the chancellor's 
ordinance they revamped the curriculum in 3 months. 

 

Session 2- The owners of Goa's 50 institutions need to make learning outcomes 
as their priority. Three leading institutions will talk of how they manage 
their institutions - ISB / Manipal/ Symbiosis and then have a panel discussion 
with owners/ trustees of Goan colleges. Mr. Umaji Chowgule, Vice President, 
Chowgule Education Society also spoke at the function.

 

Session 3 - The faculty in colleges need to teach better for improved learning 
outcomes. Faculty from Goa, BITS Pilani, IIT Mumbai will talk about pedagogy / 
Wipro Mission 10Xetc to guide our faculty to plan courses and lessons in a more 
interesting format.

 

The Summit will end with a panel discussion that lays down the roadmap and 
timeline for reform.
